Harry Potter: The Exhibition

"Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean it is not real?"

Bestaat er zoiets als teveel Harry Potter? I think not. Een paar weken terug bezocht ik daarom met mijn vriend, mijn zus en haar vriend de Harry Potter Exhibition in Utrecht. De tentoonstelling opende begin februari in de Cinemec-bioscoop en leidt je rond langs kostuums, decors en magische voorwerpen uit de Harry Potter-films. Bovendien word je voordat je afscheid neemt nog door een giftshop geleid (verrassend), met allerlei Harry Potter voorwerpen voor een véél te hoge prijs. Natuurlijk ben ik daar ook gewoon gigantisch ingetrapt en heb ik een klein fortuin uitgegeven. Ach, wat is vijftig euro voor een beetje Harry Potter magie? Klopt, best veel.

Mijn Jaar In Boeken; 51 - 55

Mijn ooit zo goed gevormde voornemen om voor elk boek dat ik in 2016 lees vrijwel direct een review te schrijven (serieus, waarom heb ik ooit gedacht dat dat haalbaar was?) is overduidelijk niet gelukt. Inmiddels 9 maanden en 58 boeken verder en ik heb welteverstaan 8 reviews geplaatst. Top. Lekker bezig. Daarom dacht ik, misschien leuk als ik voor elke vijf boeken die ik lees, een soort overlappend artikel maak met daarin mijn korte mening (kort Chris, hou die typvingertjes onder controle). Voor die enkele boeken waar ik toch liever véél meer over kwijt wil -gebaseerd op 2016 tot nu toe zouden dat dus 8 op de 58 boeken zijn; oftewel, een schamele 14%- kan ik dan altijd nog een volledige review plaatsen. Dus, vandaag begin ik met boeken 51 tot en met 55 (ik ben ook weer niet zo enthousiast over mijn eigen idee dat ik vanaf begin 2016 start).

O, en ja, dit idee heb ik compleet van iemand anders gejat, namelijk Barry Pierce, één van mijn favoriete boek reviewers.

Classics - Heart of Darkness

Vanaf het vallen van de avond tot in het holst van de nacht vertelt Marlow zijn scheepskameraden het beklemmende verhaal van zijn tocht over de rivier de Kongo. In opdracht van een Belgische handelsmaatschappij vaart hij met een afgeleefde boot naar het hart van Afrika, op zoek naar de mysterieuze verdwenen handelsagent Kurtz. Tijdens zijn reis maakt Marlow kennis met de donkerste krochten van de menselijke geest, gepersonifieerd door de bandeloze en ontspoorde Kurtz, die bij zijn dood het definitieve oordeel over de mensheid velt: 'Afgrijselijk! Zo afgrijselijk!' 

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The play will receive its world premiere in London’s West End on July 30, 2016.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Soms is het gewoon tijd voor een beetje (of heel veel) Harry Potter. De afgelopen maanden heb ik de Harry Potter-serie van J.K. Rowling nogmaals opnieuw gelezen (in de prachtige nieuwe edities die ik in februari voor mezelf kocht). Hoewel ik reviews niet echt meer op z'n plaats vind, wil ik er wel een beetje aandacht aan besteden op mijn blog.

Gelukkig plaats ik tijdens het lezen altijd veel (héél veel; wees gewaarschuwd) updates op Goodreads, waarvan het grootste deel directe quotes zijn uit het boek. En deze quotes, dus de-meest-memorabele-stukjes-Harry-Potter-volgens-Chris, ga ik komende weken met je delen.

Vandaag beginnen we met Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. En alsjeblieft, als je nog niet overtuigd was van de schoonheid van deze covers, kijk naar dit pareltje.

The Fellowship of the Ring ~ LOTR

The Well Of Ascension

Een Storm Van Zwaarden II

Onverminderd geselen kleine en grote veldslagen het continent Westeros. Verbonden worden even snel verbroken als ze worden gesloten, verraad woekert als een besmettelijke ziekte. Huis Lannister heeft zijn greep op de IJzeren Troon verstevigd, maar het zwarte schaap van de familie, Tyrion Lannister, verzet zich in stilte tegen de machinaties van zijn intriges bedreven zuster, die zowel zijn vader als zijn verwende neef manipuleert. 

Robb Stark heeft andere problemen. Hij is gedwongen zijn jonge koninkrijk te verdedigen tegen de plunderingen van de Grauwvreugdclan, die het Noorden wil opeisen. En ook Jon Sneeuw staat voor een moeilijke keuze: vertrekken van de Muur of het hoofd bieden aan de strijdmacht die aan de andere kant optrekt? Een continent verderop nemen de krachten van Daenerys Stormgeboren en haar draken met de dag toe. Wie zal overwinnen? Wie zal verliezen?

Een Storm Van Zwaarden

Wanneer de slagschaduwen van de winter naderen, raken de Zeven Koninkrijken door bloedveten verdeeld. De leden van de Nachtwacht die de Muur bewaken, bereiden zich voor op de grote kou en op de wandelende doden die onveranderlijk meekomen. Elders...

...in de ijzige streken voorbij de Muur, komt een leger van vogelvrijen bijeen. Zij beschikken over de wilde magie van deze ijswoestenij en maken zich op voor een invasie van het Noordelijke Rijk, waar de jeugdige Robb Stark nog maar zo kort zijn kroon draagt. Robb wordt door bittere gevoelens gekweld - zijn zusters zijn verdwenen, verloren geraakt, dood of overgeleverd aan de grillen van de wrede kindkoning Joffrey, die met meedogenloos harde hand het Zuiden regeert. Het is niet de vraag of, maar wanneer de strijd zal losbarsten.

The Silkworm

Leeslijstje voor Portugal

Vorig jaar schreef ik nog over mijn "koffer vol met boeken"; dit jaar neem ik in plaats van zes boeken maar twee boeken mee op vakantie. Maar dit keer vergezeld mijn nieuwe liefde me, waardoor het inpakken een stuk makkelijker wordt: mijn iPad-mini, Toch heb ik al wel enigszins een idee wat ik deze vakantie wil gaan lezen en vandaag laat ik mijn "leeslijstje" zien.

Classics - Middlemarch

This is the Penguin English Library Edition of Middlemarch by George Eliot.
